The Career Mistake That Cost Me My Catapult Years

The Biggest Professional Mistake I Ever Made

When people ask me about the biggest professional mistake I ever made, I don’t point to a failed project, a missed deal, or a bad hire. My biggest mistake was a career choice that looked smart on the surface but ended up slowing down my trajectory during the years that mattered most.

The Decision That Looked Right

In the late 1990s, I was working in a thriving corporate environment, recognized as a high-potential talent. Around me, colleagues were moving across businesses, taking global assignments, and building the kind of experiences that would propel them into senior leadership. I wasn’t part of the formal leadership development programs, but I was ambitious enough to take my destiny into my own hands.

When an opportunity arose to move from the financial side of the business into a more industrial one, it seemed like the perfect way to broaden my foundation. The new role promised exposure to operations, continuous improvement, and the discipline of Lean Six Sigma. To me, it looked like the catapult that would launch the next stage of my career. I took it without hesitation.

The Reality I Overlooked

What followed was not a launchpad, but what I now call the “career graveyard” years.

I moved into a small-town environment, far removed from the energy and networks of global hubs. The culture was highly localized, with colleagues who were bright and hardworking but largely rooted in their surroundings, with little interest in broader ambitions. I quickly felt like an outsider.

Worse, I was assigned to a support function. While necessary, it was seen as peripheral rather than central to strategy and decision-making. It was never going to be the place where leadership teams turned for vision or breakthrough impact.

On top of that, my manager, though well-meaning, had neither the experience nor the inclination to mentor someone highly ambitious. We were peers in age, but worlds apart in mindset. Without guidance, sponsorship, or opportunities to showcase what I could bring, conflicts were common and progress was minimal.

The net result: while my contemporaries used those critical, career-catapulting years to climb several rungs of the ladder, I stagnated.

The Lessons That Came Later

Looking back, I don’t regret my ambition. What I regret was moving without perspective. I mistook a “solid” role for a strategic one. I assumed that hard work and certification alone would translate into recognition and opportunity. I failed to ask the deeper questions:

  • Will this role place me in the rooms where decisions are made?

  • Will I have visibility with sponsors who can champion my growth?

  • Does this environment align with my ambition, or will it clip my wings?

The hard truth I learned is this: the wrong role doesn’t just slow your career—it consumes time you’ll never get back.

How It Changed Me

That experience shaped how I mentor and advise others today. I tell ambitious professionals that career growth is not simply about accumulating skills. It’s about choosing arenas where those skills can be recognized, sponsored, and amplified. It’s about aligning ambition with context, not just effort with output.

My biggest professional mistake was not taking a risk. It was taking the wrong risk. And the clarity that came from it has guided every decision I’ve made since.
